Skincare 101 Part 1 – Pampering Mature Skin

Written by: | | 2 responses

Every face tells a story. A smile, a frown, a lifted eyebrow—our faces are expressive and help us connect with those around us. Our faces are also on the front line, bombarded by the sun, air pollution, and dirt. When we’re working too hard, or skipping our daily doses of vitamins and water, our faces show this, too. Whether we’re smiling, laughing, crying or puzzling, our faces deserve the best care we can give. Nurturing our faces also lifts our mind and spirit along the way. Having a terrific skincare routine and great products to use will give you the extra edge you need to keep your skin looking and feeling its best.

In this primer, you’ll discover products for mature skin care, and how to apply them at home or in the spa. Each product is full of ingredients specially designed for mature and dry skin.

Mature Skin Care

Mature skin demands hydration, moisture, and tender loving care. The array of products below deliver a blend of alpha lipoic acid, hyaluronic acid, CoQ10, MSM, DMAE, vitamin C ester, and vitamins A, B, and E. This powerhouse combination works together to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles, to clarify, soften, refine and rejuvenate your skin.

Step 1: Cleanse

We have two favorite cleansers for maturing skin: Green Tea Cleanser and the Multi-Tea Cleanser. Packed with antioxidants and moisture-retention ingredients, your skin will look and feel amazing. Perfect as is, you can also personalize these unscented but creamy cleansers by adding Essential Oils such as clary sage, jasmine, rose, ylang-ylang, neroli, geranium, and lavender to help enhance skin tone, and relax the mind and body.

At Home Application of the Tea Cleansers
• Squeeze a pea-sized amount onto dampened palms and rub palms together.
• Apply to wet face, neck, and chest.
• Massage in upward circular motions with your fingertips, avoiding eye area.
• Rinse thoroughly with tepid water and pat dry with a soft, clean towel.

Spa Application of the Tea Cleansers
• Steam your client’s face to facilitate the softening of the skin.
• Massage a pea-sized amount, using effleurage, over entire face, neck and décolleté.
• Ensure absorption with ease by adding water or spritzing toner. Use a steamed towel to remove traces of cleanser.

Step 2: Exfoliate

The perfect exfoliation choice to equally please those customers who have either sensitive, mature, normal or combination skin. Exfoliants polish away dead skin and leave skin soft and supple, enhancing a natural, fresh look.

Up to 4 times a week: Rooibos Facial Cream Exfoliant is a stimulating and softening blend of soothing jojoba, nourishing vitamin E, and rooibos tea extract. Delicate, earth-friendly jojoba wax beads are easy on your skin, and the organic coconut oil and soothing white willow bark extract leave delicate skin feeling soft and hydrated. These non-tearing, yet effective round jojoba beads help tenderly remove and polish, revealing the look of an even, youthful glow.

Once a week: Bamboo Face & Body Polish is an excellent physical exfoliator focused on sloughing off and softening skin. It uses premium Bamboo Stem Extract combined with soothing Roman Chamomile and Lavender Distillates to help calm and relax skin. After the soothing affects of these ingredients they are followed by moisturizing Organic Jojoba Oil and Rosehip Seed Oils. Provitamin B5 and Vitamin E add a final layer of nourishing ingredients in this unscented, dense polish.

At Home Application of Rooibos Facial Cream Exfoliant
• Use every two to three days after cleansing, and before using your toner.
• Gently massage in upward circular motions onto face avoiding eye area.
• Don’t forget your neck and chest!
• Rinse thoroughly with warm water and pat dry with a clean, soft towel. Follow with the Lavender Tincture in the toning step.

Spa Application of Rooibos Facial Cream Exfoliant
• Apply exfoliant with dampened hands to your clients’ cleansed skin.
• You can choose to use this exfoliant under steam.
• Massage the product evenly over clients’ face, neck and décolleté, concentrating on areas of concern.
• Remove all traces of exfoliant with warm damp sponges or towels.

Step 3: Tone

Toners help the skin by balancing the pH, minimizing the look of pores, removing residuals missed during cleansing, and preparing the skin to receive the serums and moisturizers to come.

Rosewater Facial Toner: A simple and hydrating facial toner that has been formulated to soften and condition the skin while balancing and toning. Formulated with Lebanese Rose Water, this toner smells just like a freshly blossomed rose. And is a bestseller! Organic Aloe helps soothe while Vegetable Glycerin leaves skin soft and supple.

Mature Skin Facial Toner: specifically formulated for mature skin, this toner offers a surge of moisture-boosting properties to help support, soften, and revive more mature skin. With carefully selected ingredients, this formula can help renew, rejuvenate, and smooth, and is suitable for all skin types. It also uses a soothing base of Rosewater and includes some of our favorite ingredients with real results: vegan DMAE and a spectrum of brightening alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs). Unscented and ready to be customized.

At Home Application of Mature Skin of Rosewater Facial Toners
• If desired, add Essential Oils directly to this tincture and shake well.
• After cleansing, moisten cotton round, and gently wipe over cleansed face, neck, and chest, avoiding eye area.
• Let dry before moisturizing

Spa Application of Mature Skin of Rosewater Facial Toners
• After removing the cleanser, spritz onto the face, neck and décolleté, ensuring to cover your clients’ eyes.
• You can also put this on a soft cotton round, and wipe over the face for a more relaxing experience.
• Gently use tapotement massage techniques to ensure the product is delivered to the skin.

Step 4: Serum

Serums provide fast absorbing, concentrated ingredients to create beautiful, glowing skin. Always use a small amount under your moisturizer as part of your skin care.

We currently have 2 favorite serums, and one gel/cream that can double as a serum if combined with a moisturizer (which we recommend anyway).

Supreme Facial Serum: A delicate but highly potent serum formulated to improve the appearance of tone, hydrate, soften, and revitalize the skin. Provides mature skin with a needed boost of Coenzyme Q10. while a long list of powerhouse ingredients elevate this serum, including Vitamin A (Retinol), Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid), Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide), Provitamin B5 (DL-Panthenol), Vitamin E (Tocopherol), DMAE, Alpha Lipoic Acid, and Hyaluronic Acid. A customer favorite with a very light hint of roses that can easily be modified with additional scents.

Ultimate Facial Serum: Provides mature skin with everything it needs to fight back against the effects of time. Powerful Coenzyme Q10, DMAE, Carotenoids, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Vitamin A (Retinol), Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid), Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide), Pro-Vitamin B5 (DL-Panthenol), and Vitamin E (Tocopherol) all work in harmony to create a super effective serum that remains light and easily absorbed. Gently scented with the hint of Rose.

CoQ10 Hydrating Cream-to-Gel: Innovative formulation gives this cream a wonderful gel application when in contact with the skin, leaving skin hydrated and covered with antioxidants without being greasy. This very light, unscented cream typically needs a moisturizer applied on top, whereas the previous two serums are more moisturizing.

This cream’s star ingredient is Coenzyme Q10, also known as CoQ10. It’s one of the most powerful antioxidants and works in conjunction with Vitamin E in this cream for superior antioxidant action with visible results. Complemented by Astaxanthin, a vegan carotenoid that functions as a remarkable antioxidant, contributing to the antiaging abilities of this gel.

At Home Application of the Serums
• Squeeze a petite pea-sized amount onto fingertips
• Massage onto cleansed face, neck, and chest.
• Follow with Paramount Facial Moisturizer.

Step 5: Moisturize

Every face (neck and chest, too), needs a moisturizer on a daily basis. Moisturizers’ primary function is to help keep all of the nourishing oils from your serum on your skin.

Under Eye Nourishing Cream and the Nourishing Lip & Eye Cream make wonderful facial moisturizers in any anti-aging line.

Under Eye Nourishing Cream: This cream is perfect for the sensitive skin around the eyes, but it’s is more versatile than the name may suggest. This amazingly nourishing cream will also work wonders on your face, neck, or anywhere else you need some gentle, soothing rejuvenation. It’s star ingredients are antioxidant-rich Grapeseed Oil and Organic Jojoba Oil, leaving skin soft and happy. This is an unscented base and we encourage you to add scenting oils of your choice.

Nourishing Lip & Eye Cream: This perfectly soft and gentle cream is expertly formulated to soften your most delicate skin. Your lips will love it, your eyes will love it, and your whole face will be asking to get in on the nourishing party. This cream is packed with antioxidants, fatty acids, nutrients, and moisturizing oils to create a customer-favorite youth-boosting formula ready for your customizations. Some of our favorite ingredients include Pumpkin, Marula, and Baobab Oils combined with moisturizing Hyaluronic Acid and nourishing Organic Cranberry Extract. Unscented but is organically preserved so we encourage scenting this product.

• After applying your serum, squeeze a pea-sized amount onto fingertips

Step 6: Masks (full pampering!)

Masks are a wonderful and indulgent part of any skin care routine and allow you to address skin-specific concerns. We typically recommend using masks once a week, depending on the function of the mask, but your skin will almost always love gentle, nourishing masks like those below.

When skin feels dry and tight: Equalizer Cream Facial Mask. Deliver intense hydration and soothe skin with star ingredients that set this mask apart. Skin will feel calmed and moisturized after this pampering mask rich in Hyaluronic Acid, DMAE, and MSM. Boosted by Organic Rooibos Extract and Organic Jojoba Oil, this mask is ideal for sensitive, dry, mature skin.

When skin needs a pore cleanse: Charcoal Clarifying Powder Facial Mask. Make the most of Activated Charcoal by combining it with Clay and DMAE for balanced, glowing skin. This mask is rich in purifying clay and activated charcoal while delivering powerhouse ingredients like Blue Green Algae and DMAE. This powder mask can be hydrated with water or any liquid of your choice (though we don’t recommend yogurt for this specific mask). Great alternatives are plant oils or even juices.

When skin needs more gentle exfoliation: Wild Oats & Honey Mask. Clarify, refine, and soften skin with this powerful mask. A small degree of chemical exfoliation adds an extra dimension while leaving Aloe and Jojoba to enhance the humectant and antioxidant properties of honey. Oatstraw helps soothe tired skin while Organic Aloe and Jojoba Oil boost the softening effect.

Hi Laura-

I remember reading in one of your blogs that “chemical exfoliation” vs physical exfoliation are better for mature skin. Does Essential offer a good “chemical exfoliate?”

Thank you-

Hi DeeDee.

Brandon from EWL here!

Ironically this was reposted recently, so might help.

Our current chemical exfoliator options are Glycolic & Rose Gel Mask, our Papaya & Pineapple Mask, and our Simple Papaya & Pineapple Mask. If you wish for more “oomph” you can stir in some lactic acid or some glycolic acid. The “how to use” is on each ingredient for your reference.

Later this year, it is our goal to introduce a chemical exfoliator that is a booster. It can either be added to other product or used alone as a wipe on/wipe off, so keep an eye out for that one.

Let me know if you have any more questions.
